Handy Hints
- Use all the space available; dissemble items such as bed frames and tables.
- Fill containers to capacity. Partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse.
- Heavy items such as books or tools should be packed in small boxes. When packing books please ensure that these are packed in small cartons so that they aren't too heavy to handle safely.
- Fragile items should be cushioned with packing materials and place toward the top of the cage.
- Appliances such as washing machines, fridges, and dishwashers must be completely drained and dry.
- Freezers and fridges must be empty!
- Wrap up electrical cords and tape them to the side of the appliance.
- Tape any doors shut.
- Use moving pads or wrap your wooden furniture in blankets to avoid scratches and dents. Tape the blankets down or cover the entire item with dust proof wrap for optimal protection.
- Empty the drawers and the shelving inside furniture.
- Wrap any breakables securely in bubble wrap.
- Work from the largest and heaviest items up to the smallest and lightest items in a box.
- Double-tape the bottom of all boxes to make sure the bottom doesn’t fall out when you lift it.
- Breakables such as pictures and mirrors are safest stored on their end, rather than flat.
- Breakables such as glasses and plates are best stored on their end within their box.
- Place a layer of crushed paper between each layer of packing and one between the last layer and the lid of the carton. Then seal the carton with 5cm packing tape, ensuring that both the base and top of the carton are securely sealed.
- Mark on side of the carton its contents, the room it came from and your name.
